1. Recommend Lingayat as a Religion or Brace for Protests: Leaders
The Siddaramaiah government in Karnataka must recommend Lingayat for the status of a separate religion by 30 December, influential community leaders demanded on Sunday. Talking at the Lingayat Conclave at Bengaluru’s National College Grounds, influential pontiff of the Basava Dharma Peetha, Mathe Madadevi, said that the government’s failure to do so will be countered with agitations.
While announcing the community’s demand for religious status, Madadevi said that apart from the status of a religion separate from Hinduism, Karnataka government should also demand a religious minority status for the Lingayat community.
She added that if their demands were not met, they would start agitations. “Our protest won’t be violent like Jat or Rajputs, but we will come on streets in numbers,” she said.

2. Study Reveals Bengaluru Residents Spend 7% of Life Commuting
Most Bengaluru residents spend 7 percent of their entire life commuting between office and home. This would likely increase to more alarming levels if the city's traffic woes are not effectively dealt with.
A study by Move In Sync – a city-based firm that helps corporate companies manage their employee transportation – also reveals that the average commuting distance in the city is 16.8 kilometres and the one-way trip takes 47 minutes.
"People on average spend 1.34 hours on the road each day," Move In Sync co-founder and CEO Deepesh Agarwal said.
After strenuous data collection on traffic congestion between February and June, the organization chose 11 areas.

3. Sister, Mother Differ Over Proposed Paper to Continue Gauri Lankesh's Legacy
Following a city court's injunction restricting employees of slain journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh from starting a new news journal using Gauri's name, differences have cropped up in the Lankesh family.
While Gauri's mother Indira Lankesh, who got the injunction, said that only Gauri could have brought out the journal, her sister Kavitha told STOI she supports Gauri's employees on their ideas to continue her legacy.
Younger brother Indrajit Lankesh chose to remain silent on the issue.

4. IISc Sets up Cell for Kannada Policy
The name boards of professors, HODs, departments, rubber stamps, circulars, and official communications of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), the nation's premier science establishment, henceforth, will also be in Kannada along with English and Hindi. The IISc has set up a dedicated Kannada Implementation Cell to ensure that the tri-language formula is effected on the campus.
A memorandum has been issued by the institute to the deans of faculties, IISc-employees association and the staff in this regard.
"We are following the tri-language formula. So far, all our communications have been in English and Hindi. Henceforth, they will be in Kannada also," said an officer. Sources said a team from the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) recently visited IISc campus and mandated the institute to implement Kannada in all its works.

5. Cheating Complaint Against HMT Ltd
Eight senior officials of HMT Ltd have been booked by the Jalahalli police after a businessman filed a complaint alleging that the Public Sector Undertaking failed to pay his dues amounting to around Rs 16 lakh for supply of raw material.
D Manokaran, owner of Sri Shakti Industries located in Rajajinagar, approached the 7th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Wednesday, which issued a direction to the Jalahalli police to file an FIR. The court has directed the police to investigate the matter and submit a report within three months from the date of registration of the FIR.
In his complaint, Manokaran said that he had supplied raw material to HMT in 2015 for which the company owed Rs 18,11,196. But he was given a cheque for only Rs 2,22,194 on 4 December 2015.

6. Karnataka Set to Make Aadhaar a Must
Karnataka is quietly building a technology backend to deliver services through Aadhaar and is in the process of framing a law to make the 12-digit unique number compulsory.
The government’s e-governance wing, a portfolio Chief Minister Siddaramaiah handles, is moving to issue certificates and documents virtually through DigiLocker, the Centre’s flagship Aadhaar-based platform for storage, sharing and verification of documents.
The government is also working on introducing e-sign, an Aadhaar-based electronic signature that will negate the need for citizens to physically sign documents.
