This Bakrid, Some in Lucknow to Cut Goat Cake Instead of Real Goat

As people across India prepare to celebrate Bakrid on Wednesday, 22 August, some in Lucknow have found an “eco-friendly” way to mark the festival of sacrifice, ANI reported.
People in Lucknow are preparing to celebrate Eid-al Adha, not by sacrificing goats, rather by cutting cakes that simply have an image of a goat on them. A buyer at a bakery told ANI, “The custom of sacrificing an animal on Bakrid is not right. I appeal to everyone to celebrate the festival by cutting a cake instead of an animal.”
Earlier, on 21 August, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath instructed police and relevant authorities to ensure that no animal sacrifice is carried out in the open. Similarly, the Uttarakhand High Court imposed a ban on slaughtering goats in the open or in public on the occasion of Bakr-Eid, PTI reported.
Interestingly, in 2017, the Muslim Rashtriya Manch, a Muslim organisation affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), had appealed to the Muslim community to end the practice of sacrificing animals and suggested they instead cut goat-shaped cakes.
Raja Raees, convenor of the organisation, had told NDTV that Muslims could “cut a cake baked in the shape of a goat.”
