At least 11 people were injured in an explosion on the Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express train in Assam's Udalguri district on Saturday, 1 December, police confirmed to ANI.

The explosion occurred in a coach of the Kamakhya-Dekargaon Intercity Express at the Harisinga railway station around 7 pm.

It is not yet clear what had caused the explosion. Investigations are underway.

The railways said in an initial press release, “Three passengers of a general second class coach received minor injuries and were treated in Harisinga by railway doctors.”

“Two of the injured passengers have been discharged,” the press release added.

Later, police confirmed to ANI that the number of people injured was actually 11.

According to news agency PTI, railway and police officials rushed to the site of the explosion – around 90 km from state capital Guwahati.

The explosion followed the killing of five Bengali-speaking persons by suspected ULFA(I) militants in Tinsukia district on 1 November.
