#Goodnews: Army Gets 1st Woman Legal Officer on Foreign Mission

Lieutenant Colonel Jyoti Sharma was appointed as the first female Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer of the Indian Army to be deployed on a foreign mission, according to news agency ANI.

According to officials she will be appointed as the military legal expert with the Government of Seychelles and her job will involve liaison with government officials on matters of defence.

In September, Wing Commander Anjali Singh joined the Indian Embassy in Russia as a Deputy Air Attache, becoming India's first female military diplomat to be posted in any foreign mission, ANI reported.

Earlier, Wing Commander S Dhami became India's first female officer to become the Flight Commander (second-in-command) of a flying unit.

The Indian Army has already initiated the process of inducting women as jawans into the Military Police Corps, the recruitment for which began in April.

The plan is to induct women in a graded manner for them to eventually comprise 20 percent of the military police, according to the agency.

Up until now, women, who make up just 3.8 percent of the army, were only allowed to serve in select areas such as medical, legal, educational, signals and engineering.
