In a first, Apsara Reddy, a transgender journalist and activist was appointed National General Secretary by the Congress on 8 January 2019. This move makes Apsara the first transgender office bearer of the party.

The All India Mahila Congress welcomed Apsara aboard and Congress Spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi lauded the initiative calling it a step towards a more inclusive and equal society.

Who Is Apsara Reddy?

Apsara Reddy is a former journalist and a politician who had stints with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

She has worked with various media houses and written on an array of topics from politics to education.

She had joined the AIADMK party in 2016, before moving to the pro-Sasikala camp of the AIADMK after Jayalalithaa’s demise.
