Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh passed away on Saturday, 1 August. He was 64.

The Uttar Pradesh politician had kidney-related complications and was being treated in Singapore. According to news agency PTI, he had undergone a kidney transplant in 2011 and had not been keeping well for a long time.

Amar Singh was expelled from the Samajwadi Party in 2010, but was elected as a Rajya Sabha member in 2016 with the party's backing.

He was also once considered close to Amitabh Bachchan and his family during his political career.

‘Known For His Friendships’

Expressing condolences to his friends and family, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that Amar Singh was an "energetic public figure". "In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life," the PM said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh too echoed a similar sentiment, saying, "During his public life, he maintained friendship with all parties."

Other political leaders too condoled the 64-year-old leader’s death
