The Maharashtra government has agreed to implement the recommendations made by the 7th Pay Commission for the state’s 17 lakh employees and five lakh pensioners from 1 January 2019, The Times of India reported on Thursday, 26 December.

It was also agreed that the arrears since January 2016 be released in five equal installments over the next five years, the report said, adding that in order to implement the recommendations, the state government needs close to Rs 21,000 crore in the first year.

The state government employees, upon implementation of the scheme, are expected to receive an average hike of around 16% (2.58 times the basic salary) in their monthly salary, the report said.

The union of Gazetted officers, however, said they would go ahead with the planned strike on 5 January, when they will be pressing for their other demands.

Their other demands include a five-day working week and increase in the retirement age from 58 years to 60 years.
