A 22-year-old man on Sunday, 28 January, raped and murdered a 19-year-old girl in Karnataka's Bidar district after she repeatedly rejected his advances.

According to a Times of India report, Shamsuddin, the accused, allegedly coaxed the victim into a forest near the Kosam village in Bidar, where he sexually assaulted her and murdered by slitting her across the throat. He then dumped her body in the forest.

Protests have broken out in parts of Karnataka against the rape and murder, forcing the police to launch a latchicharge on the mobs. According to News 18, the violent mob in Bidar is being led by the BJP and several other Hindu outfits.

Meanwhile, a police officer investigating the case told TOI that Shamsuddin had been pursuing and failing to woo the victim for over two years.

After raping and killing her, Shamsuddin reportedly informed her family of her death and surrendered in the Dhannura station, armed with a confession of his double crime.

He also supposedly led the police team to the spot in the forest where he had dumped the body.

While Shamsuddin has been arrested, an investigation is also underway in the case. The body has been handed over to the family after the post-mortem, reported the daily.
