The first day of May holds a special place for all Maharashtrians. The state of Maharashtra was formed on this day about 59 years ago and since then the first day of May is celebrated as Maharashtra day or Maharashtra Diwas or Maharashtra Din.

Celebrations including the traditional lavani performances and Marathi poem recitations form an essential part of the holiday’s customs

The governor of Maharashtra addresses a large gathering at Shivaji Park in Dadar to commemorate the formation of the day while state government and private sector also launches new projects and schemes.

1st of May in Maharashtra is also observed as a dry day, sale of liquor is prohibited with exception to foreigners.

The state government and private sectors not only launch new projects and schemes on this day but many also conduct their annual celebrations on Maharashtra Day.
