1. Karunanidhi’s Health Stabilised, Stalin Appeals for Calm
After a “transient setback” in the clinical condition of Karunanidhi, the vital signs are normalising, said Kauvery Hospital press statement on Sunday, 29 July.
The police lathi-charged the large crowd gathered outside Chennai's Kauvery Hospital.
Asserting that Karunanidhi's condition is stable, his son MK Stalin, in a statement, appealed to the cadres to not indulge in any violence and cause any inconvenience for the general public.
2. Cybercrime Wing Nabs Trio for Student’s Data Breach
The cyber crime wing of Central Crime Branch arrested three people of private technology firms for alleged data breach in which details of Class 10 and 12 students were leaked out to private educational institutions.
Officials from Directorate of Government Examinations had submitted a petition to City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan in this regard. The arrested were identified as P Praveen Chowdry (39) of Vadapalani, A Sudhakar (32) of Vadapalani and Venkata Rao (50) of T Nagar. “Preliminary investigation suggested that Praveen Chowdry, the proprietor of Nari Technologies Pvt Ltd obtained the details and sold them on websites for money,” a CCB official said.

3. Sterlite Keen to Expand Operations in Thoothukudi
Despite public backlash and a Madurai Bench of Madras High Court order stopping the construction of a new copper smelter, Vedanta Limited has drawn grand plans to expand its copper smelter operations in Thoothukudi.
In its Annual Report for financial year 2017-18, which will be filed with the Bombay Stock Exchange after it is adopted by the shareholders in the upcoming Annual General Meeting on 24 August, GR Arun Kumar, who is the Whole Time Director and Chief Financial Officer, Vedanta Limited, said, “We are continuing our Tuticorin II expansion by four lakh tonnes per annum (TPA). When complete (target: FY2020), we will be one of the world’s largest single-location copper smelters.”

4. Apollo Rooms Used by Jayalalithaa Examined by Commission
Lawyers Niranjan and Parthasarathy of the one-man enquiry commission probing the death of former CM Jayalalithaa and two lawyers from the Sasikala camp examined the around ten rooms used by Jayalalithaa during her hospitalisation.
The visit took place between 7 pm to 7:45 pm on Sunday. Room number 2008, the Critical Care Unit, rooms used by Sasikala and ministers over the course of the then Chief Minister’s hospitalisation, the room where the embalming took place were some of the locations that the team visited as part of the enquiry.

5. 35-Year-Old Misbehaves with Class V Girl
A 35-year-old man was arrested on Friday for sexually misbehaving with a class V girl as she was returning home. The accused Ganesan, working in a construction site, knew the child as he used to speak to her when she passed through the area to school.
“On Wednesday, he tried to misbehave with the child who, in turn, complained to her parents,” said a police officer handling the case. On Friday, the Ambattur All Women Police Station registered a case and arrested Ganesan. He has been remanded in judicial custody.

6. EMU Tragedy at St Thomas Mount, Toll Rises to 5
Eighteen-year-old Sreevatsan, who had both his legs amputated after he was injured in the St Thomas Mount railway station accident on 24 July, succumbed to injuries on Thursday night, taking the death toll to five.
“We initially revived him from the shock, but it was a massive crush injury,” said a senior doctor at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Despite the blood and muscle loss, doctors managed to revive him due to acute critical care management, but his condition quickly went downhill, the doctor said.
