Sonia Gandhi will only retire as Congress president, and not from an active role in politics, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala clarified on 15 December.

The clarification comes house after the outgoing Congress chief told reporters, ahead of the first day of the Winter Session of the Parliament, that she would be retiring – fuelling reports that Sonia Gandhi was all set to hang up her political boots.

CNN News-18 quoted Sonia as saying, “My job is to retire,” when asked about her role after son Rahul becomes president on 16 December.

A number of news channels also speculated whether she would retire as chairperson of the UPA, and as Chief of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), which comprises members of both Houses of Parliament, with many wondering whether she would also give up her Lok Sabha seat from Rae Bareli.
