A copyright violation suit of Rs 1Cr has been filed against singer Sona Mohapatra and music director Ram Sampath for performing a remixed version of a popular Odia song titled Rangabati on MTV’s Coke Studio on Friday, in Sambalpur, Odisha.
Lyricist Mitrabhanu Guintia and music director Prabhudatta Pradhan of the original Rangabati song have alleged violation of copyright and production of remix version without their permission.
Not only have they not taken permission from us, they have made mincemeat of the original song.

According to complainant’s laywer, Sagar Pradhan, a legal notice has been sent to music director Ram Sampat, singer Sona Mohapatra, her co-singer Rituraj Mohanty, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd and Hindustan Coca Cola Holdings Pvt Ltd.
The original Rangabati song was played on all india radio for the first time ever in 1975 and was officially released in 1978.
It has enjoyed a cult status among Odias since then.
It has been featured on BBC radio and Voice of America.
Rangabati Returns, the remixed version of the original song was performed on MTV’s popular show Coke Studio on Friday and has received more than 3 lakh views on YouTube.
