Supreme Court has granted protection to former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran from arrest till September 14.

According to an NDTV report, the Supreme Court asked, “Is there any purpose for his arrest? Political vendetta should not come into it, he is a political person and there may be people who want to fix him, we don’t know, less said the better.”

The Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the CBI and has sought its response in two weeks on Maran’s plea.

Maran had moved the court on Tuesday challenging the Madras High Court’s decision to cancel his bail in a case related to the alleged installation of a telephone exchange at his residence.

A three-judge bench comprising justices T S Thakur, V Gopala Gowda and R Banumathi allowed for urgent hearing of the petition.

The Madras High Court had on Monday cancelled Maran’s interim anticipatory bail in the controversial telephone exchange case and directed him to surrender before the CBI within three days while rejecting his charges of a political vendetta.
