In a move that’s sparked outrage on social media, the Mumbai police reportedly booked 40 couples for ‘indecent behaviour in public’, after rounding them up from various hotel rooms in Madh Island and Aksa areas on Thursday afternoon.

A report in Mid-Day says the Malwani police charged these couples even though they were consenting adults booked into private hotel rooms. Some were let off only after they coughed up a fine of Rs 1,200.

The police first insulted all of us... then forced us to call our parents and insulted and disgraced us in front of them. They made parents feel guilty as if their children had committed some heinous crime.

Another woman who was at the hotel with her fiancé, said she was slapped by a female constable when she refused to pay the fine.
