India’s NSG Bid: Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar Leaves for Seoul

A full member meeting of the NSG in Seoul from 23 June will consider India’s membership bid into the group.

• Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar left for Seoul on Wednesday, ahead of the Nuclear Support Group (NSG) Plenary from 23 June, to lobby with members to support India’s membership bid.
  
  

• Senior External Affairs Ministry Official Amandeep Singh Gill, in-charge of the Disarmament and International Security division is already in Seoul to help India’s case, according to sources.
  
  
• The plenary of the 48-member nations will consider India’s request to join the NSG, to enable it to trade and export nuclear technology. The bid has so far been met with resistance from China and a few other nations who argue that India is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and so cannot be permitted to join.
