Angered Over Teen’s Phone Addiction, Hyd Man Chops off Son’s Hand

Doctors said that 90 percent of the teen’s hand had been severed and that chances of restoration were bleak.

A 45-year-old man was arrested in Hyderabad for allegedly chopping off his 19-year-old son's right hand on Monday, 5 March. Hyderabad Police say the man was enraged with the teenager for watching too many films and porn on his mobile phone.

The man, identified as Mohammed Qayyum Qureshi, a butcher by profession, was arrested on Monday and has been sent to jail on charges of attempt to murder.

The incident took place in Hyderabad’s Pahadi Shareef area when Qureshi chopped off his son Khalid’s hand with a butcher’s knife when he was sleeping.

Detailing the incident, the police said that Qureshi was angry with his son, who works with a cable operator, for being addicted to films and porn at the cost of his work and health.

A couple of days ago, Khalid reportedly revolted against his father who warned him against the addiction.

In a fit of anger on Monday, Qayuum picked up the butcher’s knife and chopped off Khalid’s right hand. Hearing the son’s screams, other family members came and immediately took him to a nearby hospital, where the doctors said the hand was 90 percent severed and the chances of restoring it were bleak.

Police statement

The hand was severed slightly above the wrist, with poor chances of recovery, the police said.

Khalid is presently recovering at a hospital in the city, where the police recorded his statement. A case has been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

This incident comes a week after a minor boy in Telangana was tied to an electric pole near his house by his own father, because the boy was unwilling to go to school. 

The incident took place in Kamalapuram village in Bhadrachalam district, and a picture of the tied-up boy had gone viral on social media.

The issue was brought to light after a complaint by the Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS).
