A first-year engineering student of a private college allegedly committed suicide after being ragged by his seniors in Warangal district of Telangana.

V Sainath (18), a resident of Ramakrishnapuram in Adilabad district, had left his hostel on Monday afternoon and was not seen since then, police said on Tuesday.

We received a complaint from railway authorities at 12.20 AM stating that they had found a body on the tracks at 11.40 PM yesterday at Vaddepally. We went to the scene and found the head and body severed. It seems he laid down on the tracks and a train ran over him resulting in his death.

A suicide note purportedly written by Sainath was found in his wallet, which blamed ragging as the reason for his death, the officer said.

The note urged that ragging be stopped and stated that the unfortunate incident could have been avoided if Sainath’s seniors had not ragged him. It is not yet clear who the ‘seniors’ referred to in the note are.

Sainath’s body has been shifted to a local hospital in Warangal for postmortem. His father and relatives have been told that they can lodge a complaint if they suspect any foul play, the police said. A case under section 174 of CrPC has been registered and the matter is being looked into.
