A 38-year-old Dalit woman has allegedly been raped and murdered at a paper mill owned by a BSP MLA in Muzaffarnagar, police said on Saturday.

Police suspected that she had been raped before being strangulated to death on Friday in the mill at Jansath road, where she worked as a labourer.

The body has been sent for a post-mortem, they said, adding that an investigation is underway.

Police said they were searching for a labour contractor, Khurshid, who has been absconding since the incident.
