In what will be a relied for diesel vehicle owners, the National Green Tribunal on Wednesday softened its stance and has ordered the de-registration of diesel vehicle to be carried out in phases.

In its latest order, the environmental tribunal has asked for diesel vehicles older than 15 years or more to be de-registered first. An earlier NGT order from Monday had directed a blanket ban on all diesel vehicles over 10 years old from entering Delhi.

The green panel has directed that entry of vehicles, such as trucks, which are not registered in Delhi but are older than 15 years will not be allowed to enter its boundaries.

The NGT has directed the Delhi Development Authority to provide separate space to the DTC and the police to park vehicles that will be de-registered as a part of the process.

In its earlier order the NGT had observed that Delhi’s odd-even scheme had hardly improved the Delhi-NCR region’s air quality, pointing fingers at the drastically increasing number of impounded old diesel vehicles in Delhi.
