Gujarat Board to Follow New Class 10 & 12 Exam Pattern from 2020

The Class 10 board exams will carry a weightage of 80%, instead of the existing 70% – among other changes.

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) announced a list of changes in its examination pattern for Class 10 and Class 12 on Tuesday, 24 July. The new exam pattern will come into effect from March 2020, reports The Indian Express.

A notification issued by the board to all district education officers stated that the affiliated schools have been given instructions about the changes.

The daily quoted education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma as saying: “These changes have been done keeping in mind the CBSE examination pattern as already the central board has done away with the continuous and comprehensive evaluation. Merely changing the textbooks will not serve the purpose until the exam pattern is also changed accordingly”.

“This will enhance the writing skills and the students can perform better in NEET and JEE competitive exams,” he told the daily.

List of Changes in the Board Examination Pattern

Here are some of the changes, as per the circular issued by the board:

1. The GSHSEB will scrap the Optical Marked Reader (OMR) sheets, which were used for the multiple choice questions (MCQ).
2. 50 percent of the MCQs will be replaced by 20 percent objective questions.
3. The Class 10 board exams will carry a weightage of 80 percent, instead of the existing 70 percent.
4. The school-based comprehensive evaluation system has been replaced with internal evaluation, wherein Class 9 and Class 11 students will be evaluated internally by schools for 20 marks instead of the existing comprehensive evaluation of 30 marks from the current academic session.
5. The 80 marks question paper will comprise 16 marks worth of objective type questions and 64 marks worth short questions, long questions and essay type questions.

All government, grant-in-aid and private primary and higher secondary schools affiliated to the education board will follow the NCERT books for Maths, science and languages for classes I till IX and class XI from this academic session, according to the Gujarat Education Department.
