The Indian equity benchmark indices traded in the red at the closing of the markets with Nifty below 11,500 mark and Sensex down by 173.78 points on Wednesday, 10 July.

The S&P BSE Sensex was down 173.78 points at 38,557.04 while the Nifty50 fell 57 points to end at 11,498.90.

Nifty Midcap, Auto, Metal, PSU Bank and Realty indices slipped by a percent each, a Moneycontrol report said.

Earlier during the day, the equity benchmarks fluctuated between gains and losses in the opening trade as the Sensex rose 30 points or 0.1 percent to 38,760 as of 9:20 am after falling 0.3 percent intraday.

The Nifty, during the opening session, traded little changed at 11,573 after it fell as much as 0.34 percent.

The market breadth was tilted in favour of buyers.

The Indian rupee opened lower against the US dollar. The home currency depreciated 0.14 percent intraday to 68.64 against the greenback.
