India's Service Sector Activity Growth Hits 7-Year High in Jan

India's services sector activity surged to a seven-year high in January driven by sharp increase in new business orders, leading to job creation and business optimism amid favourable market conditions, a monthly survey said on Wednesday.

The IHS Markit India Services Business Activity Index rose from 53.3 in December to 55.5 in January, signalling the strongest upturn in output in seven years.

"The Indian service sector sprung to life at the start of 2020, defying expectations of fragility and building on to the momentum gained at the end of 2019," said Pollyanna de Lima, Principal Economist at IHS Markit.

Two militants were killed and a CRPF jawan died in a gunbattle in Shalteng area outside Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, 5 February, police said.

The encounter began after the militants opened fire on security forces, officials said.

SC Refuses to Stay Hc Order on Reservation to Marathas; Matter to Be Heard on 17 March

The Supreme Court Wednesday, 5 February, refused to stay the Bombay High Court order upholding a Maharashtra law granting reservation to Marathas in education and jobs.

A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Deepak Gupta said the matter has been pending for long and required detailed hearing.

It fixed 17 March to hear at length a batch of pleas filed for and against the Maratha quota.

People's Conference leader Sajjad Lone and PDP leader Waheed Para have been released from detention in Jammu and Kashmir after 6 months. They were detained after the abrogation of Article 370 on 5 August, 2019.

5 Members of Family Killed as Car Plunges Into Canal in UP's Kannauj

Five members of a family, including three children, were killed on Wednesday when their car fell into a canal near Chatru Aharpur village in Indergarh area in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj, police said.

Priya (27), Mohini (23), Shubhi (2), Lado (5) and Krishna (10) were killed on the spot when the car fell lost control and fell into the Gang canal, they said.

Death Toll Rises to 23 in Eastern Turkey Avalanche: Officials

At least 23 people were killed on Wednesday in an avalanche in eastern Turkey during a search and rescue mission after a similar incident the day before, local officials said.

The bodies of 14 rescue workers and nine civilians were discovered at the scene in Van province, where they had been helping uncover a minibus buried by an avalanche late Tuesday, said governor Mehmet Emin Bilmez according to state news agency Anadolu.

Science Centre to Be Set up at Over Rs 30 Crore in Ambala Cantonment

The Haryana government will set up a science centre at a cost of over Rs 30 crore in Ambala Cantonment, a senior official said on Wednesday. Named Aryabhatta Vigyan Kendra, the centre will come up on five acres adjacent to the War Memorial in the city, he said.

Additional Chief Secretary, Science and Technology, Amit Jha, said the work on the centre will commence in April and it will be completed by December 2021.

US President Donald Trump Cleared of All Impeachment Charges

The US Senate acquitted President Donald Trump of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress on Wednesday, 5 February, following a historic two-week trial.

The Republican-majority Senate voted 52-48 to acquit Trump of abuse of power and 53-47 to acquit him of obstruction of Congress.

Utah Senator Mitt Romney was the only Republican to break ranks, voting for conviction on the abuse of power charge.

President Trump will be making a statement regarding the Senate vote at 10:30 PM IST on 6 February.
