Microsoft has said that its profits rose sharply in the past quarter, boosted by improving sales across a range of consumer products and business services, sending its shares higher.
Overall profit for the quarter ending 31 December rose 38 percent from a year ago to USD 11.6 billion, while revenues jumped 14 per cent to USD 36.9 billion.

Los Angeles jury has ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay USD 1.1 billion to a university in California for infringing on four Wi-Fi technology patents.
Apple was ordered to pay USD 837 million and Broadcom must pay USD 270 million to the California Institute of Technology, in what is thought to be one of the largest patent verdicts ever.
The court pronounced the verdict on Wednesday, 30 January.

The Odisha government has decided to include road safety in the school curriculum from the academic session 2020-21 for class 10 students, an official said.
Odisha is among the top four states in the country where the maximum road accident deaths take place due to drunken driving.
"The students of class 10 will be imparted education on road safety. It is up to the experts in the education department as to how they incorporate it in the syllabus - in the form of a subject or a special chapter," Transport Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda said.

The UN has appointed Gita Sabharwal of India as the Resident Coordinator in Thailand. The UN Resident Coordinator is the highest-ranking representative of the UN development system at the country level.
Resident Coordinators lead UN Country Teams and coordinate the world body's support to countries in implementing the 2030 Agenda. Resident Coordinators are the designated representatives of the UN Secretary-General.

A powerful explosion ripped through the Seijang area of Imphal East district on Thursday but no damage was caused, the police said. This is the second blast in the insurgency-hit state within a week.
The blast occurred in an uninhabited area around 8:30 am, a senior police officer said.
