Harassed by Retired Cop, UP Man Ends Life in SSP Office

Frustrated by being constantly harassed by a retired policeman for loan recovery, a 60-year-old man killed himself by consuming poison in the office of the senior superintendent of police in Bareilly, officials said on Thursday. Hari Prasad Meena, a furniture trader, had taken a loan of Rs 2 lakh on high interest from Rajiv Saxena, the brother of retired sub-inspector Ashok Kumar.

Meena had paid Rs 4 lakh, double the principal amount, to Saxena over the past two years. But Meena's family said the retired policeman and his brother claimed the loan was not fully repaid and got Meena's house registered in their names, the SP said.

Rajasthan to Give Tax Concession to Passenger Vehicles Visiting Ramdevra Fair

The Rajasthan government has decided to grant concessions in vehicle tax (Motor Vehicle Tax) and Special Road Tax for passenger vehicles coming from neighbouring states to visit the annual Ramdevra fair in Jaisalmer.

As per the decision of the state government, only Rs 6,500 will be collected per passenger vehicle coming to the fair, instead of nearly Rs 17,000, for ten days as Vehicle Tax and Special Road Tax.

Two Critically Injured in Blast at Firecracker Unit in Bengal Baruipur

Two people were seriously injured in a blast at a firecracker unit in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Thursday, a police officer said.

"Two workers of the unit -- Dulal Naskar and Arindam Sardar -- were critically injured in the blast, impact of which blew away the asbestos roof and damaged the walls of the house," the officer in Baruipur police station said. We suspect the blast might have been triggered by sparks of a short circuit in the house falling on explosives stored there for making firecrackers, the officer added.

Man Fires in Air at Toll Plaza in TN, Arrested Along With Four Others

A man allegedly opened fire in the air at a toll plaza on the city outskirts after refusing to pay the toll even as four other occupants of the SUV he came in drove away, police said on Thursday. Police personnel present in the vicinity overpowered him and soon nabbed the other four people nearby Valanthur after intercepting the vehicle.

Police said none was injured in the incident that occurred past midnight on Wednesday and all the five people have been arrested and four 'illegal' guns were recovered from them.

Two Killed in a Road Accident in Maharashtra

Two people were killed in a road accident in Washim district on Thursday morning, police officials said. The mishap took place on the Karanja-Darhva road when a speeding bus hit a two-wheeler. A dog suddenly came in front of the two-wheeler, forcing its rider to apply brakes. However, the bus coming from behind could not stop in time and crashed into the two- wheeler.

The deceased, who were on the two-wheeler, were identified as Prakash Thak (50) and Mutsufa Khan.

Pregnant Woman Commits Suicide in New Delhi, Husband Arrested

A 23-year-old pregnant woman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of a building in Rohini's Sector-2 area, police said on Thursday. Following the incident, her husband was arrested. The woman, identified as Sangeeta, allegedly jumped from the balcony of her building on Monday.

The woman, who was five months pregnant, succumbed to injuries on Wednesday. Her family alleged that she was harassed by her husband - Govind and his family over dowry.

A lion cub, around six to eight months old, was found dead in Devaliya range of Gir forest in Gujarat on Thursday, a senior official said. D T Vasavda, chief conservator of forests, Junagadh wildlife circle, said the cub was found by a field staff.
