US Approves USD 3.3 Billion Sale of Anti-Ballistic Missiles to Japan

Washington approved the USD 3.3 billion sale of anti-ballistic missiles to Japan Tuesday, following close behind a series of new ballistic missile tests by North Korea that could threaten the US ally. Japan will buy up to 73 of the Raytheon-made SM-3 Block IIA missiles, which are designed to be fired by the ship-board Aegis system to intercept incoming ballistic missiles, the Pentagon said.

Madras HC Awards 3-Year RI to Accused in Bonded Labour Case

The Madras High Court on Tuesday set aside the acquittal of a rice mill owner's son and sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment for engaging six scheduled caste people as bonded labourers.

Justice P Velmurugan also directed Selvakumar of Thirukalukundram in Kancheepuram district to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 each to the six rescued bonded labourers.

Man Wanted in 3 Murder Cases Arrested in Delhi

A 21-year-old man, wanted in three murder cases in Haryana, was arrested from Rohini in the national capital, police said on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, Sumit Katwal, a resident of Gohana in Haryana's Sonipat district was trapped near Kanjhawala Road in Sector-21, Rohini, on Sunday and arrested, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rajiv Ranjan said.

Two country-made pistols and three live rounds were recovered from his possession, he said.

South Korea Scrapping Japan Pact Helps China: US Official

South Korea's decision to end a military intelligence-sharing pact with Japan will benefit China and reduce the allies' ability to respond in crises with North Korea, US officials said on Tuesday.

Seoul said last week that it would exit the agreement as a row intensified over compensation of wartime forced labour by former colonial ruler Japan, which earlier ended preferential export treatment with South Korea.

"I don't think Beijing is unhappy about this outcome," a senior US official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

SIT To Probe Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank Scam

Mumbai Police on Tuesday formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe an alleged scam at Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB), days after the Bombay High Court pulled it up for not registering an FIR in the matter.

The high court, last week, ordered the Economic Offences Wing of the police to file a first information report against NCP leader Ajit Pawar, a former director of the bank, and others for allegedly causing losses to the bank through their actions.

Railways to Offer up to 25% Discount in Some Shatabdi, Tejas Trains

Railways is set to offer up to 25 percent discount in trains like Shatabdi Express, Tejas and Gatiman Express which have low occupancy to bump up ticket sales, a senior official told PTI.

The discount will be applicable in all trains with AC chair car and executive chair car, except the Chennai Central-Mysuru Shatabdi Express, Ahmedabad-Mumbai Shatabdi Express, and the New Jalpaiguri-Howrah Shatabdi Express in which existing discount schemes will be continued, the official said on Tuesday.

NCP MLA Resigns from Assembly; Set to Join Shiv Sena

Six-time legislator Dilip Sopal on Tuesday resigned as NCP MLA and is set to join the Shiv Sena on Wednesday.

Assembly Speaker Haribhau Bagde accepted Sopal's resignation, a Vidhan Bhawan official said.

On Monday, Sopal, NCP MLA from Barshi in Solapur district, had formally announced his decision to quit the Sharad Pawar-led party.

Assam Govt Will Extend Free Legal Aid to Needy People Excluded From Final NRC

Seeking to allay the concerns of bonafide citizens, the Assam government said on Tuesday it will provide legal aid to the "needy" people whose names do not figure in the final NRC list to be published on 31 August.

Three Beaten up on Child-Lifting Suspicion in Bihar

Three people were beaten up by a mob in Bihar's Gaya district on suspicion of being child-lifters, police said.

The incident took place near Maher village late on Sunday when the trio attempted to flee the village after an alleged illegal hunting session.

The three persons all in their 30s and residents of Gaya town caused a flutter in the village by firing a shot, Tankuppa police station SHO Vikas Chandra said.

"They were accompanied by a 12-year-old boy from their locality in Gaya. On seeing agitated villagers rushing towards them, they panicked and started fleeing in their car. This led to rumours that the three persons were running away after abducting the child," Chandra said.
