Kya Hua Tera Vaada: Shillong Demands Better Medical Infrastructure

Travelling to distant places to get treatment is not a solution, say Shillong’s voters.

Ahead of 2019 polls, medical infrastructure is one of the voters’ main demands in Shillong. Every election, citizens are promised better healthcare but that’s a promise which hasn’t been fulfilled so far.

“The government is not doing anything. There is no hospital here where I can get my treatment done. All I want to ask the government is ‘Kya hua tera vaada?’”

“I have thyroid, uric acid, infection in my kidney and even a stone in my kidney. I was examined by doctors here, but no doctor was capable enough to provide any treatment. I had no option but to travel to Delhi to get treated.

But I’m fortunate that I could get some treatment as I could afford to travel. There are many who cannot travel to other cities for treatments,” Ahmed said.

“For the poor, it is very difficult to travel to cities like Delhi, Kolkata or Chennai. Poor people don’t have the money to get treatment from another city. Doctors here are equipped to treat small kinds of illnesses. But for kidney-related problems, you need to travel to another city. So people need to think twice before going to another city as they don’t have money.”

Harish who works in the same salon says that the government needs to provide us with good hospitals, so that a person does not need to travel to Bengaluru and can get treated here.
