“Nathuram Godse was a ‘deshbhakt’, is a ‘deshbhakt’ and will remain a ‘deshbhakt’. People calling him a terrorist should instead look within, such people will be given a befitting reply in these elections.”
BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur in Bhopal

This is what BJP candidate Pragya Singh Thakur had to say in response to Kamal Haasan’s comment, “Godse, the first extremist of independent India, was a Hindu.”

According to the BJP, Thakur has apologised for her comments.

However, I decided to ask my friends, what they have to say about this absurd comment of hers.

“Pragya Singh Thakur has called Nathuram Godsea ‘deshbhakt.’ Now calling Nathuram Godse a deshbhakt is like calling Adolf Hitler a harbinger of peace.”
Shubham Ganguly

A lot of us were not comfortable with what we heard from Pragya Thakur. Such a comment is not acceptable. I mean, please, she needs to open a book, read history before making such comments. I really wish people joining politics would be more educated because this is coming from a next level of illiteracy.

My friend Chandrima Ghosh Roy backs my statement and says, “This hypocrisy and illiteracy, must go away from our country.”

There were a few who didn’t want to come in front of the camera but did have an interesting view to share. Manik Gupta claims that this statement only proves that the ruling party propagates a nationalism of violence.

Syed Adil said these comments are a deviation from real issues.

Neel Nikhar had a word of caution for the media.

The comment made is not just absurd but also highly disrespectful. Tanveer Khurshid finds this an alarming phenomenon and hopes that such a comment is not made again.

Tuhinshubhra felt that Thakur’s comments proved that her party supported Godse.

Irfan Macchiwala said there is a “need to remember and inculcate in ourselves the feelings of oneness and non-violence, preached by Mahatma Gandhi.”

M Mehtab Raahi said the Election Commission must take action.
