How We, Jadavpur Univ Students, Marched For CBI Probe in Gaya Case
The apathy of the state has enraged us students.
Patwatoli locality in Bihar’s Gaya district is in terror after the gruesome rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl who went missing from there on 28 December. Her dead body was found in pieces on 6 January.
After JNU and BHU, on 16 January, the students of Jadavpur University in Kolkata took to the streets and marched peacefully with torchlights from the campus area to Dhakuria demanding justice for her. The rally involved almost 800 students.
One of the main demands of the students was a CBI investigation into the incident. The post mortem report, which was initially delayed, stated that the heart and lungs of the girl were missing (as reported by The Indian Express). A question arises on the authenticity of the report. We believe that a report delayed is a report tampered with.
Close friends and neighbours of the victim have stated to the media that the police is corrupt and is torturing her parents. We demand the police stop torturing her parents and release them soon and put the actual culprits behind bars. We need a CBI probe to unveil the true facts of this case.
Safety of girls has always been in question, and after Nirbhaya and brutal rape of a minor in Kathua, the Bihar incident has left us shaken. The saddest part is that the media did not cover such a heinous crime when it should have been the concern of the nation. There are different versions of the story everywhere.
Slogans the students of Jadavpur University chanted echo our frustrations that the perpetrators are still at large. “Hum sharminda hain, tere qatil zinda hain (we are embarrassed, your murderers are alive)" ; "Bihar Police Shame Shame" ; "We want CBI"; could be heard loud and clear.
No incident concerning the safety of women is less than any other and they should be addressed at a national level.
Any rally or march may not give us immediate result, but each one forces the authority and the government to rethink their decisions. It gives them the realisation that in a democratic society, the interest of the 'people' should be the priority.
We hope that she gets justice and that her murderers get the punishment they deserve. The number of crimes against women is increasing day by day and still the government is ignorant about it. The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, too thought of keeping shut! There is only one question that remains – are girls safe at all?
