Sawan Shivratri 2019: How is it Different From Maha Shivratri?

The holy month of Sawan or Shravan began on 17 July 2019. It is the fifth month of the Hindu calendar and is considered to be the most auspicious month of the year. The entire month is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

The month of Sawan is full of festivity. Apart from the Sawan Shivratri, there is the celebration of Sawan Somwar when Lord Shiva’s devotees keep fasts, Hariyali Teej, Nag Panchami and in the end, Rakshabandhan. His devotees spend their time worshipping and fasting to get his blessings.

Shivratri in the month of Sawan is known as Sawan Shivratri and is believed to be extremely auspicious. Several Shiva devotees keep fasts and perform different types of pujas on the day of Sawan Shivratri.

However, it is to be noted that Shivratri in the month of Sawan is different from Maha Shivratri.

Sawan Shivratri 2019: Date

Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on 30 July this year. Thousands of Shiva devotees visit Shiva temples and perform Rudrabhishek, Maha Mrityunjaya Puja or some other kind of puja and seek Lord Shiva’s protection from all dangers, diseases and good health and fortune.

Maha Shivratri was celebrated on 4 March this year and will be celebrated on 21 February in 2020.

Maha Shivratri is Different From Sawan Shivratri

There is a common confusion about Maha Shivratri being the only Shivratri celebrated throughout the year.

As per the Hindu calendar, the 14th day of every lunar month or the day prior to the new moon is known as Shivratri. Since such a day also falls in the month of Sawan, the Shivratri of Sawan or Shravan is known as Sawan Shivratri.

However, Maha Shivratri has the highest spiritual significance. It is believed to be the day when Lord Shiva got married to Goddess Parvati. There are multiple other legends and stories attached to the celebration of Maha Shivratri.
