If it’s your birthday today, you already have enough reasons to celebrate. You must already be feeling so special. But we bring to you a few more reasons to feel special today!
Matt Damon
The American actor is perhaps best known for his film Good Will Hunting, for which he won the prestigious Academy Award. You might also know him from the film The Martian (2015) – where he plays the role of a scientist stranded on planet Mars.
His lead role in the Bourne trilogy also earned him some die-hard fans. Damon's other notable films include Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and The Departed (2006). The actor turns 47 on 8 October.
Bruno Mars
If you’ve heard Uptown Funk, then you already know who Bruno Mars is! The single, which was a collaboration between Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, was the top song in many countries for a considerable amount of time. The five-time Grammy winner has been hailed as one of the “best-selling artists of all time”.
His songs have regularly featured on top of the Billboard charts. Albums churned out by Mars include Doo-Wops & Hooligans (2010), Unorthodox Jukebox (2012) and 24K Magic (2016). And did we tell you that his band is called ‘The Hooligans’? Bruno Mars turns 32 on 8 October.
Javed Sheikh
The actor and director from Pakistan has been a prominent face in both Pakistani and Indian cinema. Born in Rawalpindi, Sheikh has acted in more than 100 Urdu and Punjabi films. His notable directorial ventures include Muskhil (1995) and Yeh Dil Aap Ka Huwa (2002). However, one of the Pakistani films he directed – Khulay Aasman Ke Neechay – failed to work at the box office, and led to significant financial loss.
You might recognise him from his roles in the Bollywood films Namastey London and Om Shanti Om. Javed Sheikh turns 63 on 8 October.
Jens C Skou
The Danish medical doctor and Nobel laureaute was born in 1918 and received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977, for his discovery of Na+,K+-ATPase – an enzyme that acts as a "biological pump to transport ions". Skou lost his father at an early age, and went to boarding school at the age of 15. A large chunk of his teen years were also marred by the horrors of World War II as Nazi Germany invaded Denmark.
In 1944, Skou graduated from the University of Copenhagen and received his doctorate a decade later. He began his career at Aarhus University in 1947, retiring in 1988 but retaining his offices at the Department of Physiology.
