Nineteen-year-old Jacob Obers posted a picture with his girlfriend where the two of them are seen standing in front of a grand house in Toledo, Ohio. The caption read, “Bought our first house at age 19...What y’all buying.” This tweet attracted quite a lot of attention, and led to the couple being heavily trolled online.

Irked by his bragging and suspicious of his claim, some Twitter users called out Obers for lying about buying the house on his own when he must have been merely benefiting from his parents’ riches.

Many Twitter users said they were certainly not buying this story, with one user even stating that Obers’ poor realty record was proof that it must have been his dad, and not Obers, who bought the house.

Obers was also compared to Donald Trump, for boasting about success that was a direct result of his parent’s wealth.

The style of Obers’ tweet was mocked by a few users who posted clearly hyperbolic claims about what they had bought.

A Joke Misunderstood?

Responding to the trolling, Obers wrote that the tweet was a joke all along, and that the house in the photo is the Wildwood Manor House in Toledo, Ohio which it was impossible for him to have bought. When asked how he expected people to recognise the house and catch the joke, Obers said that he never intended the tweet to read by such a wide audience. The post was just intended for his followers.

His girlfriend also backed Obers, posting that all the trolling missed the entire point of the joke.
