While addressing two women MPs discussing Arms Amendment Bill 2019 in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, 10 December, Chairperson M Venkaiah Naidu said, "In my opinion, women don’t need firearms, others will protect you."

According to The Hindu, he had allowed ‘one of the two MP’s’ to share their take on the Bill, as the House had run out of time to discuss the issue.

Arms Amendment Bill 2019 is aimed to bring in stringent punishment for people involved in the illegal manufacturing of arms while ensuring easier provisions for people with licensed arms.

However, netizens couldn’t help but call out his comment as sexist and condescending towards the women MPs.

The Bill was passed shortly after the aforementioned discussion in Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
