Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas was recently invited to address the 2019 Women In The World Summit at New York City’s Lincoln Center where Tina Brown interviewed on a range of topics - Bollywood and Hollywood, women empowerment, #MeToo and her grand wedding with Nick Jonas last year.

Desi girl Priyanka Chopra represented India remarkably well, even when the questions came across a tad bit ignorant, cliched and lacking in cultural nuance.

When asked how Chopra succeeded in a country like India where men are pushed towards success more than women - a typical west vs east question thrown in context of women empowerment - Chopra’s answer aptly pointed out women empowerment in India is a much more complex issue.

India is at a precipice of modernity and tradition, which sometimes clashes with each other. For example I was raised to be opinionated by my parents. There is that kind of parenting and upbringing  as well in India. At the same time India is one of the oldest countries in the world. It is hard to change mindsets that have existed for centuries. Just to give you context, America is about 400 years old? Now think of how far back the Indian ideologies go and how deep seated they are. The fact that India, being such an old country, is at a place where it is giving its women so much power, it is so incredible.
