Sudha Shivpuri, who played the role of Baa on the massively popular, long running TV soap Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi is no more. She passed away this morning at the age of 78. She had reportedly suffered a stroke last year that seriously affected her motor skills. The actors on this show came and went but Shivpuri was a comforting constant. Her acting career started at a very young age as a means to support her ailing mother. She also featured in several films starting out with Basu Chatterjee’s Swami (1977) followed by Insaaf Ka Tarazu (1980), Hamari Bahu Alka (1982), Burning Train (1980), Vidhaata (1982) and Maya Memsaab (1993).
After her husband, actor Om Shivpuri’s demise in 1990, she became a regular on TV soaps like Missing, Rishtey, Sarhadein and Bandhan but Kyunki... gave Shivpuri her big break in 2000 when Ekta Kapoor offered her the role of Baa. It was one of the most progressive roles on the daily soap.
Actor Ronit Roy, who played Shivpuri’s grandson on the show said that he’s happy that her soul is at peace now.
I feel sad at her demise and my condolences for the family. At the same time I feel happy that her soul is now free from sorrow. My payers for her soul and her family. I will always remember her as being a sweet Baa.
