Richa Chadha’s Take On 2017: Year of the Women, Feminism, #MeToo
Richa Chadha on the year gone by and what it meant for women.
2017 saw women speaking out and how. More than a few Hollywood “greats” were brought down, the #MeToo campaign set Twitter and Facebook ablaze, in India Raya Sarkar’s list to name and shame sexual predators created a stir. Merriam-Webster has declared ‘Feminism’ the ‘Word of the Year’ for 2017 and a few media outlets have dedicated 2017 as the ‘Year of the Women’.
In this context, Richa Chadha, one of Hindi film industry’s outspoken and spunky actors spoke to us about what ‘Feminisim’ means to her. Richa also commented on what she found extremely evocative about Time Magazine’s Person of the Year 2017 cover. The actor explained how the scarring of the the legacies of the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey gave many women including her a sense of justice and why unlike Hollywod, the act of naming and shaming in Bollywood would take time.
While Richa describes the “speaking out” by women in 2017 as beautiful, she also hoped that it would bring about a palpable change in society and not restrict itself to just being a online trend.
