Originally set to release on the 17th of September to capitalise on the four-day weekend of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the makers of the Vijay starrer Puli, have announced that the film’s release has been pushed to October 1st.

“We requested for more time since the output of certain CG-heavy scenes that form the fulcrum of the plot is not satisfying. We are working on the same with foreign studios, to whom the work has been outsourced, to attain perfection,” said a source in the VFX team.

The postponement of Puli has already created ripples in the industry with a string of producers pulling all stops to get their films on screen, to cash in on the September 17th slot.

“Big budget star-vehicles are always known for last minute changes that lead to delays and difficulties for theatre owners. Now, minimum three to four films would compete to take Puli’s berth to benefit from the festival holidays. The consequences have already started rattling the multiplex programmers,” said a theater owner in Chennai.

Three notable films including Sivakarthikeyan’s Rajini Murugan, composer-turned-actor G.V Prakash’s Trisha Illana Nayanthara and veteran comedian Goundamani’s comeback film in the lead role in 49 O have already confirmed their release dates as September 17th.

Sri Thenandal Films, one of the most dynamic and sought after distribution houses in K’town, is also vying for a September 17th slot according to trade pundits. They had already snaffled the theatrical rights of Anushka Shetty’s biopic war drama Rudhramadevi and Nayanthara’s women-centric horror drama Maya, which are on the brink of post-production.
