Om Puri, along with Smita Patil, Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi, was one of the forerunners of alternative cinema in India. A favourite with directors like Govind Nihalani, Satyajit Ray, Gulzar and Shyam Benegal, Om Puri also made his imprint on mainstream Bollywood as well as Hollywood.
