Sandy Johnson’s The Indian Detective, a four-part comedy series developed by Frank Spotnitz and Smita Bhide (of theTransporter: The Series fame) for comedian Russell Peters in his first scripted leading TV series role, is slated to air in India on December 19.

Yeah! This is the same ‘Somebody’s gonna get hurt real bad’ guy who will be in a headliner act for the first time. And guess who is playing his dad in the series, after a successful outing as the Pakistani father to Kumail Nanjiani in the hit Amazon film, The Big Sick? Anupam Kher!

Named in Rolling Stone‘s 50 Best Stand Up Comics of All Time list, the Canadian comedian of Indian descent essays the character of Doug D’Mello, a Toronto cop who ends up investigating a murder, out of the blue in his father’s Indian homeland and stumbles upon a lethal plot involving a billionaire property developer. Amid all this he grapples with a sense of alienation in his country of origin.

The Indian stereotype of Sitar music is conspicuous in trailer and seeing Russell Peters outside of the role of a comedian - let’s just say it takes getting used to. Going by the fate of comedian-turned-actor Kapil Sharma’s Firangi, we hope that The Indian Detective sticks the landing. Russell’s comic flair comes through in the father-son scenes.

Here’s a glimpse of the ‘funny guy’ appearing all excited about shooting in grimy Mumbai, which he refers to as ‘the real deal’.
