Taylor Swift swept the American Music Awards 2019, which were held in Los Angeles on 25 November, taking home six honours, including Artist of the Decade, Artist of the Year and Favourite Album for 2019’s Lover. This brings the total number of AMAs the pop star has won to 29, beating the King of Pop Michael Jackson who has 24.
“This year has been a lot of good, a lot of really complicated, so behalf of my family and me, thank you so much for being there and caring,” said Swift in her acceptance speech. The singer has been embroiled in a bitter battle with talent manager Scooter Braun and her former record label Big Machine over the rights to the back catalogue of six albums, which also nearly put a stop to her performance at the AMAs.
“This album really felt like a new beginning, and I also really love my record label, Universal and Republic. Monte Lipman, Lucian Grainge, thank you for being so generous to me and allowing me to make whatever music I want to make,” Swift said after winning favourite pop/rock album for Lover, her first album not released on the Big Machine Label Group. “As a songwriter it’s so thrilling to me that I get to keep doing that,” she said.
Other big winners of the night were Khalid and BTS, who won three awards each. Newcomer Billie Eilish scored two awards – New Artist of the Year and Favourite Alternative Artist. Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish were among the artists with the highest number of nominations at the 2019 AMAs.
