The ‘chandni’ of Bollywood, Sridevi, departed for her heavenly abode after a cardiac arrest claimed her life in Dubai on Saturday. She was renowned throughout the country, not just for her brilliant acting skills and but also for her mesmerising dance performances. Sridevi was with her husband Boney Kapoor and younger daughter Khushi in Dubai at the time of her death, attending the wedding of nephew Mohit Marwah.

The superstar lit up the big screen with her vibrant dance performances and cheeky characters. From Himmatwalla till Judaai, she did it all and with the same intense energy. In Nagina (1986), she showed us how graceful she could be and in Mr India (1987), she showed her sultry side.

Sridevi began acting as a child artist in Tamil films at the age of four and became a popular child actor, having been a part of several Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She first made an appearance in Bollywood in 1975 in the film Julie, in which she played the lead actor Lakshmi’s little sister. She acted in a number of hits in the 1980s and the ’90s, which gave Bollywood a thirst for her talent.

According to a report in Indian Express, Sridevi’s brother-in-law and actor Sanjay Kapoor confirmed the news by saying:

Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai. It happened roughly around 11:00 -11:30. I don’t know more details yet.

As the world bids farewell to the ‘Hawa Hawai’ girl, here’s a look back at some of her extraordinary dance performances that kept the nation glued to their screens.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
