In a police complaint, a member of the Shiv Sena IT Cell has alleged that streaming giant Netflix is ‘defaming Hindus and India’ through the content it showcases. Ramesh Solanki filed the complaint at Mumbai’s LT Marg police station and gave examples of shows like Ghoul, Leila & Sacred Games along with shows of standup comedian Hasan Minhaj.

He has accused Netflix of trying to ‘paint an incorrect picture of Hindus and India globally.’

According to an NDTV report, the complainant stated, “Almost every series on Netflix India is with the intention to defame the country on a global level. It is with deep-rooted Hinduphobia that the platform is portraying the nation in a bad light.”

He will also be submitting a copy of the complaint along with a CD as video evidence to the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the Commissioner of Police and the Cyber Cell.

Citing Leila as a prime example of ‘Hinduphobic’ content, Ramesh Solanki said in his complaint that the land of ‘Aryavarta’ in the series is an undertone to suggest that the Hindu Rashtra will be like the one portrayed.

“The SC’s earlier verdict that was recently upheld said that Hindu is a way of life. And to suggest that the way of life will be like a radical cult, is demeaning and hurts our religious sentiments"

He also alleged that stand-up comedian Hasan Minhaj’s show, The Patriot Act, tries to spread propaganda with his episode about the abrogation of Article 370. He has urged the authorities to look into the matter and take necessary action against Netflix from ‘summoning their team to cancelling their licences, as deemed fit.’
