Every Girl Is a Goddess: Guneet on Her Oscar-Winning Docu ‘Period’

Producer Guneet Monga’s documentary, Period. End of Sentence won big at the Oscars, taking home the Academy award for Best Documentary Short. Set in India, Period. End of Sentence, revolves around women who are fighting against the stigma of menstruation and also the work of Arunachalam Muruganantham, the real ‘Pad Man’.

Guneet tweeted her excitement on the big win:

Thank you to the Academy for the highest honour and for recognising the efforts of the young girls from Oakwood school in LA to Kathikera in UP in helping us shatter the glass ceiling. Periods are normal and in no way do they stops us from achieving anything. This has been more than 10 years of work of Action India run by Gauri Chaudhary on educating reproductive rights on the ground in many villages.&nbsp;

She continued talking about periods and the Indian taboo:

Every girl in India or anywhere around the world needs to know this and hear this loud and clear. Period is an end of a sentence but not a girl’s eduction.

The 26-minute documentary, Period. End of Sentence, directed by Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, is co-produced by Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment, which earlier co-produced films like The Lunchbox and Masaan.

Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman also tweeted out a congratulatory message for Guneet.

Period. End of Sentence is streaming on Netflix, it highlights the stigma around menstruation for women in India. Before the big night, Guneet tweeted this out.
