Jon Favreau’s remake of the beloved 1994 classic The Lion King has become the fourth Disney film to earn over one billion dollars at the global box office this year. The other Disney productions to have crossed billion dollars in ticket sales across the world in 2019 are Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and the live-action remake of Aladdin. Variety reports that the film has earned $361 million at the domestic box office and $638 overseas. Internationally, its performance has been strong especially in China with $115 million, the United Kingdom with $48 million and Brazil with $44 million.

The last time that Disney had four films cross the billion dollar mark in one year was 2016 with Captain America: Civil War, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Finding Dory and Zootopia. With Frozen 2 and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Disney is likely to break this record by the end of the year.

Disney also hit another milestone this July when it hit $7.67 billion in ticket sales worldwide and set a new all-time record for global ticket sales for a single studio, smashing the mark it previously set in 2016 with $7.61 billion.

In India, The Lion King earned Rs 81.57 crore in its first week and raked in Rs 114.27 crore by its second week.

According to film trade analyst Taran Adarsh, this makes it the fourth Disney film to cross Rs 100 crores in India after Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War and The Jungle Book.
