In a shocking development, the Spider-Man franchise will exit the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Owing to Disney and Sony Pictures’ inability to reach a suitable agreement, Marvel will no longer be producing any Spider-Man films. The news was reported by entertainment website Deadline.

The news comes at a time when the last Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home produced by Kevin Feige, crossed the James Bond film Skyfall to become Sony Pictures’ all time highest grossing film. Up until recently, Sony Pictures solely owned the Spider-Man franchise. However, it recently joined hands with Disney for the Tom Holland reboot of the franchise.

Sources told Deadline that two more Spider-Man films are in the works.

According to the report by Deadline, Disney demanded a larger share in profits as part of the future contract. Precisely, the company wanted a 50/50 division, not in the range of 5% of first dollar gross. Which is what it had been receiving until now. However, Sony did not want to give up a sizable portion of the profits of one of its biggest franchises at the moment. Sony tried to strike up other negotiations but Disney was not interested.

Sources have revealed that two more Spider-Man films are in the works. Sony Pictures is hoping to get actor Tom Holland and director Jon Watts to helm them. However, Jon Watts is currently not under any kind of contractual obligation to return for the next film.

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) both starred Tom Holland as the superhero Spiderman. Both were helmed by Jon Watts. The character was introduced with the helm of marvel in Captain America: Civil War and played a key role in the two Avengers films that followed.
