Journalist and film critic Shubhra Gupta’s book, 50 Films That Changed Bollywood (1995-2015), is a personal selection of fifty influential Hindi films influential over 20 years. The list of films are an interesting mix of the big blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Ghajini and Om Shanti Om, out-of -the box winners like Satya, Khosla Ka Ghosla and Johnny Gaddar, and little gems such as Udaan, Black Friday and Love, Sex Aur Dhokha.

Gutpa’s introduction says she chose films that, “Turned Bollywood decisively in a new direction. Changed the narrative. Caught a moment in history. Reflected the swift cataclysmic changes happening in the world outside the movies. Changed our perception, deepened it, and shone a light on it. And redefined it.”

Apart from her own reviews of these films, accompanied by an analysis of why it was such a game-changer, each chapter is also introduced with an iconic dialogue from the film that it talks about. We’ve brought to life 10 out of the 50 popular dialogues chosen in the book:
