Theatre and film actor Shaukat Kaifi passed away at her residence in Juhu, on Friday. She was 91. Shabana Azmi’s mother, Shaukat Kaifi was the wife of noted Urdu poet and film lyricist Kaifi Azmi.

Along with her husband, she played a major role in working for Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and the Progressive Writers Association (PWA). She is best known for her work in M.S. Sathyu’s Garm Hava, Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan and Sagar Sathadi’s Bazaar. She was last seen in Saathiya (2002)

Javed Akhtar told The Quint that she was admitted at the Kokilaben Hospital. “She was in and out of ICU and wanted to come back home. She passed away a few hours back,” he said.

“She was like a mother to me and she was living with us for the last three-four years. She was the reason for my marriage with Shabana, without her it wouldn’t have been possible. She encouraged us and defended us. She was a wholesome personality.”
