Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for extravagant sets, grand costumes on the big screen. After the success of Padmaavat, he is apparently set to take a plunge into the digital space, peepingmoon.com reported. His project Heera Mandi, which was conceived as a film, is reportedly going to be turned into a web series. However, unlike Karan Johar who has launched Dharmatic Entertainment under Dharma Productions to create content for Netflix and Amazon Prime, Sanjay Leela Bhansali will not have a separate division.

“The first web offering will be a series on the life and times of the female gangster Gangubai Kothewali. Heera Mandi is apparently in the final stage of the writing and will go on floors later this year”, a source told peepingmoon.com.

Earlier, Priyanka Chopra was in talks about playing the protagonist in the film, but now it is unclear whether she will still be a part of the project.

Gangubai Kothewali was one of the most dreaded pimps of Kamathipura – the red light area of Mumbai. She ran many brothels and is hailed as a woman who fought for the rights of sex workers and protected many women who were forced into the trade.
