On Friday, Dr Niraj Uttamani, COO at Lilavati Hospital, told the media that Saif’s parameters had improved and he would be shifted out of the ICU.

The actor sustained an injury to the thoracic spinal cord and a 2.5-inch-long knife fragment was removed during surgery and a leak of spinal fluid was also repaired.

“There were two injuries on his hand and one was in the neck which has been cured by plastic surgery. I have operated the spine and taken out the sharp object in the spine. Saif Ali Khan is better now. We have started his normal diet and he is speaking and moving. We made him walk, and he walked well. He has been shifted from the ICU to the normal ward," Dr Nitin Dange, Chief Neurosurgeon Lilavati Hospital, told the media.

The doctors further stated that the actor was ‘very fortunate’ because the ‘sharp object had gone very deep but it did not damage the spinal cord’.

They clarified that the actor was advised bed rest for a week and asked to not receive visitors to reduce the chance of infection.

Mumbai Police Arrested Accused in Thane; Court Granted 5-Day Custody

Mumbai police arrested the prime accused in the case on Sunday (19 January), three days after the attack, and identified the accused as 30-year-old Mohammad Shariful Islam.

"Preliminary evidence suggests that the accused is of Bangladeshi origin. He entered India illegally and changed his name. He was using Vijay Das as an alias,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone 9 Dixit Gedam said during a press briefing on Sunday.

The police sought 14 days of custody of the accused in a remand application filed in a Bandra court while alleging that custodial interrogation was required to determine if the accused acted alone or was instigated to commit the crime, a report in Indian Express stated.

Meanwhile, the accused’s lawyer, Sandeep Shekhane, claimed that the accused has been in Mumbai for the last seven years and has family in the city, adding that he has denied the ‘attempt to murder’ allegations, ANI reported.

The cops believe that Islam scaled the wall of an adjacent building before entering the actor’s building through a rare staircase, NDTV reported. The suspect was seen on CCTV entering and exiting the building from the fire escape.

Islam was later seen at Bandra station and was captured in a shop’s CCTV footage in Dadar buying a phone cover, before purportedly going towards Kabutarkhana.

A report in Indian Express stated that the cops tracked the accused to a labour camp in Thane. Islam had purchased food with a UPI transaction and the cops obtained the details of the same from the shop owner.
