Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju has been generating excitement and buzz from all across the board. The teaser, trailer and songs have made everyone very eager to watch the Sanjay Dutt biopic. In fact, Ranbir has been widely praised for his powerful and honest portrayal of the ‘Deadly Dutt’.

However, while the makers and fans alike strongly feel that no one could do a better job of the role than Ranbir did, superstar Salman Khan had a different opinion about this.

For ‘Sanju’, I was thinking why is somebody else playing this bit? The last 8-10 years. You cannot do justice to that. Sanju should have played the last bit. I have seen the trailer.

Ranbir Kapoor responded to this statement in a recent media interaction.

It has never happened that a person played himself in his own biopic. This destroys the effect of a character. I knew that I will be compared to Sanjay Dutt and that is why I have tried my best to do justice to his role. Whether people see me in 40-year old Sanjay Dutt’s avatar or 20-year old, they should feel that they are watching an artist who is playing Sanjay Dutt. It is correct that I cannot become a second Sanjay Dutt.

Sanju also has a very strong ensemble cast, including Sonam Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Manisha Koirala, Vicky Kaushal, Boman Irani and Paresh Rawal.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is releasing on 29 June.
