Anand Kumar, the founder of the highly-successful coaching class Super 30, is in the news now. A biopic on him, starring Hrithik Roshan in the lead, is about to hit the theatres soon. But did you know about another Super 30 in Bihar, run by Kumar’s former partner Abhayanand?
Super 30 started in Patna in 2002 under the banner of Ramanujan School of Mathematics. It was co-founded by Abhayanand, an IPS officer, and Anand Kumar, a mathematics teacher. The duo took in students who could not afford the tuition fees of IIT coaching centres and prepared them to sit for the exams. The students were also provided study materials and lodging free of cost. While Anand Kumar’s mother cooked for the kids, Kumar, Abhayanand and some other teachers would coach them.
The first year itself saw remarkable results, with 18 out of 30 students making it to IIT. This increased the popularity of Super 30, and written examinations would be conducted to select the students. With the program gaining immense popularity, the number of students enrolling also increased, and 2008 saw all the 30 students cracking the IIT-JEE exam. However, after that year Abhayanand quit Super 30, saying that “the experiment is over”. He formed his own coaching centre, Abhayanand Super 30.
This year, 15 out of 21 students from Abhayanand Super 30 cracked the JEE Advanced 2019. All the students belong to economically weaker sections of the society. On the other hand, 18 out of Anand Kumar’s 30 students have cleared the exam.
